What Are Ductless Splits?

Ductless splits are home air conditioning & heating systems that can both cool your house in the summer and keep it warm in the winter. As their name implies, these types of systems don’t require a duct system to get the heated or cooled air from the air handler to the individual rooms of your house.

Instead, ductless splits are made up of an outdoor condenser unit and one or more indoor units that contain the air handler and blowers that help to circulate the air. Refrigerant lines are all that connect the outdoor condenser to the indoor units, making installation much easier, cheaper and less invasive.

Ductless Heating & Cooling

It’s the lack of ducts that make these mini-split systems so attractive to so many people. Particularly if you live in an older home that either doesn’t have space for ductwork or doesn’t have it installed yet, it’s worth looking into the ductless split units as a real home heating and cooling alternative.

Without the need to put in ductwork, ductless splits and mini–splits can be installed for much less than a more traditional duct-based system. The installation process will also be much less invasive and won’t inconvenience your family for nearly as long. This also makes ductless heating and AC systems a good option if you live in a house that simply doesn’t have room for ducts to be installed or if you’ve just added an addition onto your home and don’t want to have to add on ducts to the addition as well.

Plus, not having ducts means not having to worry about what’s collecting in them. Your ductwork can be a haven for all types of indoor air contaminants, making ductless units the better option if you have problems with dust, allergies or any other indoor air quality issues.

Ductless Systems Are Less Costly to Install

Since ductless splits and mini-splits are so much easier to install, they’re also much cheaper to have installed than a more conventional system. This means that although their initial price is a bit higher than some other types of home heating and cooling systems, they wind up saving you money in the long run because of their lower installation costs.

Ductless systems also provide you with a superior level of localized temperature control. Because the air handlers and blowers are located right in the room with you, you don’t have to worry about losing heat as the air is traveling through the ductwork of your home. And this pinpoint temperature control means less wasted energy and lower energy bills for you overall.

Ductless Split System Control

The indoor components of ductless units can be installed in one or more rooms throughout your home. Each of these units has its own individual controls as well, so you can actually set different temperatures for different parts of your home. And really, that only makes sense.

After all, why would you want to expend energy to control the temperature in parts of your home that you’re not even using? Also, this type of control can make it easier for everyone in the house to make their own area comfortable. It’s pretty common for people in the same household not to agree on what a comfortable temperature is, but with ductless mini–splits, you don’t have to.
