The R-410A Refrigerant Phase-Out
The American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act limits the production of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) based on their Global Warming Potential (GWP). The latest regulation involves phasing out R-410A, a refrigerant that has been the industry standard and used in most HVAC systems since about 2010. Because R-410A requires such high pressure for operation, it is prone to leaks. It also has a higher GWP.
HVAC manufacturers are now working to develop new systems that comply with the new standards, eliminate the use of R-410A, and utilize a new refrigerant, R-454B. As you can imagine, the development of new, compliant HVAC equipment for both residential and commercial properties is a huge and expensive undertaking. The result will be that HVAC equipment will most definitely rise in price starting in 2025.

It won’t be possible to retrofit current AC systems to use the new refrigerant. But, rest assured that if you have a system that uses R-410A, you are by no means required to purchase a new system. Existing central air conditioners, heat pumps, and ductless mini splits that use R-410A can continue to operate until the end of their lifespans.

However, if owning the newest AC technology and having an eco-friendly HVAC system are your priorities, waiting to upgrade to an R-454B system is an option.
